Baby custard

Baby custard

Baby custard is a great first custard due to its smooth and soft consistency. It is a good source of protein, calcium and iron for your baby.

Makes about 1 cup.

Microwave method: Tested in an 800watt oven.

1 egg yolk

½ – 1 teaspoon sugar

1 level tablespoon maize cornflour

1 cup (250mls) breast milk or prepared Karicare Starter or Follow-On Formula*

  • In a small microwave bowl or oven-glass jug (about 500ml capacity), whisk egg yolk, sugar, cornflour and ¼ cup of the milk
  • Microwave the remaining ¾ cup of milk on full power for 1 minute.

Whisk hot milk into yolk mixture
  • Microwave for 1 minute, whisk, then microwave 30 seconds. Whisk again. Let cool for about 3 minutes
  • Put a baby serving into a feeding bowl to serve as soon as it is cool enough.
  • Cover the rest and refrigerate

Use within 2 days.

You can use a 30g sachet of Karicare formula made up with 200ml water.

Note: For babies over 8 months, follow-on formula or standard milk can be used to make custard.
