While this white sauce is basic, it will add extra calcium, protein and fat to your baby’s diet. It can be added to a variety of vegetables in pureed, mashed or whole foods.
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
1 cup prepared Karicare Follow-On formula or Toddler milk, or standard milk (or use ½ cup milk plus ½ cup water from boiling vegetables)
Melt butter in a small saucepan. Stir in flour and cook, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon on a moderate heat for a few minutes.
Gradually stir in the milk or formula (or milk plus vegetable cooking water). Cook, stirring, until the sauce thickens.
Variation: Cheese sauce
¼ – ½ cup grated, tasty cheese
Once thickened, remove sauce from heat and stir in grated tasty cheese.

- Peel then grate the vegetables. Put in a saucepan, add 2 cups of water, cover and bring to the boil. Simmer for about 10 minutes until tender.
- Drain, reserving liquid.
- Make the BASIC WHITE SAUCE as above, using ½ cup of vegetable cooking water and ½ cup milk. Add ¼ cup grated cheese.
- For baby, put ½ cup of the drained carrot and parsnip into a small dish and sitr in 4 tablespoons of the Cheese sauce. Serve warm.
