Q: What does whey-predominant mean?
A: Human milk contains more whey than casein having a whey-to-casein ratio of 60:40. This is termed whey-predominant. Most infant formulas are whey predominant, and copy breast milk's ratio of 60:40. Cow's milk, has a whey-to-casein ratio of 20:80 and is termed casein-predominant. Some formulas are casein-predominant. Whey-predominant formulas more closely mimic human milk. They form a softer curd which is more easily digested than the curd of most casein-predominant milks. Whey predominant formulas promote a gastric emptying rate similar to that in breast fed infants.
