Why should whole eggs not be fed to my baby until after 12 months?

Q: Why should whole eggs not be fed until my baby is 12 months?

A: Whole eggs contribute a valuable amount of protein. But they should not be introduced until after 12 months of age as egg-white is very allergenic. It is one of the most common foods causing a reaction in infancy, and in severe cases, can involve swelling of the lips and face. Egg yolk can be introduced around 6-7 months and contributes useful nutrients. However, contrary to common belief, egg yolk is not a good source of iron. The iron that is present in egg yolk is not easily absorbed as it is bound to a protein in the egg.
